Uma das principais autoridades médicas britânicas fez nesta semana um alerta sobre o aumento da resistência de diversas bactérias aos antibióticos modernos.

A professora Dame Sally Davies, principal consultora para assuntos médicos do governo britânico, qualificou o problema como uma das maiores ameaças atuais para a saúde humana.

“Os antibióticos estão perdendo a sua eficácia em um ritmo alarmante e irreversível – semelhante ao do aquecimento global”, disse Davies.
Segundo a médica, o uso desnecessário de antibióticos em casos de infecções leves é o que estaria ajudando a ampliar a resistência de algumas variedade de bactérias, como a E. coli e a causadora da gonorreia.

“As bactérias estão se adaptando e encontrando formas de sobreviver aos efeitos dos antibióticos. Elas estão se tornando resistentes e os tratamentos não fazem mais efeito”, explicou.

Novos antibióticos

O problema seria agravado pelo fato de que, hoje, haveria relativamente poucas novas variedades de antibiótico sendo desenvolvidas.
Apoiada pela Agência de Proteção à Saúde britânica (HPA, na sigla em inglês), Davies fez uma apelo para que pacientes e médicos pensem duas vezes antes de fazer uso desse tratamento.

“Todos parecemos esquecer quanto uma gripe ou resfriado podem fazer com que uma pessoa se sinta mal”, disse a médica Cliodna McNulty, da HPA.

“Isso talvez faça que, ao menor sinal dessas doenças, acreditemos que precisamos de antibióticos para melhorar. Mas esse não é o caso e outros medicamentos podem ajudar a aliviar as dores de cabeça, dores musculares e coriza”, disse.Ralph lauren polo womens sweatshirts
