Exame de PSA diminui mortalidade de câncer de próstata em 22%, mas ainda é visto com ressalvas
Um grande estudo publicado na quarta-feira no periódico The Lancet concluiu que fazer exames de sangue para detectar câncer de próstata pode reduzir as mortes pela doença em 22%. Em uma pesquisa que durou treze anos, pesquisadores fizeram em 162 000 homens europeus de 50 a 74 anos o exame de sangue que mede o antígeno prostático específico (PSA, na sigla em inglês), sinalizador de aumento da próstata.
Os voluntários foram escolhidos aleatoriamente e divididos em dois grupos: aqueles que fariam o PSA a cada quatro anos e outros que não se submeteriam a nenhum teste. Os homens que tinham concentrações de PSA maiores que 3,0 ng/ml passavam por biópsia.
Segundo os cientistas, o teste periódico diminuiu as mortes causadas pelo câncer de próstata em 22%. O risco de o homem ser diagnosticado com a moléstia em estágio avançado também foi menor naqueles que faziam os exames.
